A shop with aworkshop upstairs

We started as a counter with four looms on hire purchase. The counter moved, the looms stayed, and everything else in this shop grew out of trying to keep them running.

What we sell

Seven rooms, one way of working

Cloth is bought by the lot, not by the piece. A forty-metre roll becomes lungis, then dresses, then cushion covers, and the last two metres become pouches. When the roll is finished, that colour is finished — which is why the clearance rail is honest rather than a marketing page.

Nothing is stocked because it photographs well. If a weave cannot be repaired, re-dyed or worn for five years, it does not come through the door.

Nine workshops

Ragama, Chilaw, Kandy, Polgahawela and five smaller ones. All paid at the start of a batch.

Forty metres

The size of a dye lot. It is the largest run that can be matched by eye without machinery.

Two machinists

Everything cut in this building, sizes S to XXL, and made to measure at the counter.

Zero plastic

Cotton wraps, paper tape, reused boxes. Send the wrap back and it comes off your next order.

The honest part

What is imperfect, and why

  1. Colour driftNatural indigo and marigold do not repeat exactly. We photograph the actual roll before it is cut.
  2. Soft edgesWax cools as it is drawn, so lines wobble slightly. A hard edge on batik means it was printed.
  3. Length varianceLoom-woven pieces can differ by 2–3 cm. We measure each one before it is wrapped.
  4. Sold-out is realIf the rail says two left, it means two left in the shop. Nothing is on order.
